On April 2, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held its highly anticipated first Express Entry draw of the year targeting the Trades occupations category.

The department issued 3,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for Permanent Residence to candidates who met the category requirements. This draw highlights IRCC's continued commitment to addressing critical labor shortages in Canada's construction and trades sectors, which remain a top priority for both 2025 and 2026.

1. The Draw Results: By the Numbers

To receive an ITA in this specific category-based draw, candidates needed to have an active Express Entry profile and meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum CRS Score: 477
  • Tie-Breaking Rule: February 14, 2026, at 8:53 p.m. UTC. (If more than one candidate had a score of 477, the cut-off is based on the date and time they submitted their Express Entry profiles).
  • Category Eligibility: Must have at least 12 months of qualifying work experience in one of the designated Trades occupations within the past 3 years.
The Work Experience Rule Change:
This is the very first draw held under the Trades category since IRCC updated the work experience rules on February 18, 2026. Candidates no longer need their 12 months of experience to be continuous, meaning part-time or fragmented experience can now qualify for these draws.

2. A Look at 2026 Express Entry Trends

Today's selection marks the 20th Express Entry draw of 2026. So far this year, IRCC has heavily favored candidates who are already established in Canada, specifically targeting those with Canadian work experience or those who hold a Provincial Nomination (PNP).
