Eligibility Criteria for Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship
Sponsor Eligibility
Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident living in Canada, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act. Must be at least 18 years old and capable of financially supporting the sponsored relatives. Must meet the minimum necessary income (MNI) for the last three tax years before the application date, demonstrated by Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
Sponsored Person Eligibility
Sponsored parents and grandparents must meet all requirements for medical, criminal, and background checks. Must be supported financially by the sponsor for 20 years (the undertaking period), during which the sponsor must cover any social assistance claimed by the sponsored individuals.
Income Requirements
Sponsors must meet the income requirements for their family size, including the sponsored individuals, for the last three tax years. For instance, for a family size of 4, the income requirements for the 2024 intake are $66,466 for 2023, $64,306 for 2022, and $49,106 for 2021 (IRCC Canada) (IRCC Canada).
Application Steps For Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship
Submit Interest to Sponsor Form
Express your interest to sponsor by submitting the interest to sponsor form when it becomes available. This form is only open for a limited period each year (IRCC Canada).
Invitation to Apply
IRCC randomly selects and invites potential sponsors from the pool of submissions. Invitations are sent via email, and only those invited can apply (IRCC Canada).
Prepare and Submit Applications
Complete and submit both the sponsorship application and the permanent residence application. Ensure all documents, including proof of income and relationship, are accurate and complete (Canada.ca) (IRCC Canada).
Pay Fees and Submit Biometrics
Pay the required fees and provide biometrics (fingerprints and photos) for background checks.
Medical Examination
Sponsored individuals must undergo a medical examination to ensure they meet health standards (Canada.ca).
Application Processing
IRCC processes the application, which includes verifying information and conducting background checks. Processing times can vary based on various factors.
Decision and Follow-Up
Once a decision is made, IRCC will notify the sponsor and the sponsored individuals. Successful applicants will receive instructions on how to finalize their permanent residence (Canada.ca).
