While you do not typically need to apply for a new study permit, you must inform Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) of any changes to ensure compliance with your study permit conditions. This includes updating your information if you move between designated learning institutions (DLIs) or change programs within the same institution.
Eligibility Criteria for Changing Study Program
Enrollment and Academic Standing
You must remain enrolled and actively pursuing your studies at a DLI. If you change institutions, the new institution must also be a recognized DLI. Ensure you meet the academic requirements of your new program or institution to maintain your student status.
Notifying IRCC
Inform IRCC of your change in institution through your online account. You will need your study permit number, the DLI number of your new institution, and your new Student ID number. If changing programs within the same institution, you generally do not need to notify IRCC unless it affects your study permit conditions.
Additional Requirements for Quebec
If you are transferring to or from an institution in Quebec, you must obtain a new Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) and provide an attestation of issuance when applying for the new institution.

Medical Examination (if applicable)
If your new program or institution requires a medical exam, ensure it is completed and the results are submitted to IRCC.
Processing and Approval
IRCC will update your records with the new information. There is no additional processing time if you are only updating your DLI or program.
Decision and Follow-Up
Once IRCC has updated your information, continue your studies as per the new program or institution’s requirements. Ensure you comply with all conditions of your study permit, including maintaining full-time enrollment.
