Students Guide

Planning to study in Canada? Understanding the correct requirements for a student visa (study permit) is crucial before applying. Below you will find up-to-date details for applicants inside and outside Canada, along with checklists, key conditions, and tips to improve your chances of success.

Who needs a study permit?

Most international students who want to study at a post-secondary institution in Canada must obtain a study permit before their course begins.
If you intend to enrol at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and your program is longer than six months, a study permit is usually required.

Core eligibility requirements

According to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC):

  • You must be accepted by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
  • You must prove you have enough money to pay for tuition, living expenses while in Canada, and return transportation for yourself (and any family members) should they accompany you.
  • You must have no criminal record, be in good health (and undergo a medical exam if required).
  • You must convince the visa officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your studies.

Required documents

Key documents you will need:

  • Letter of Acceptance from a DLI.
  • A Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) in most provinces outside Quebec.
  • Proof of identity (passport, photos).
  • Proof of financial support: this may include bank statements, Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), proof of tuition & housing fee payment, student loan documents.
  • Letter of Explanation: explaining why you want to study in Canada and acknowledging your responsibilities.
  • Medical exam / police certificate if required.

Financial requirements (2025 update)

For applications on or after September 1, 2025, IRCC lists minimum living expense amounts for a student plus one family member (excluding tuition & transport):

  • 1 applicant: CAD $22,895
  • 2 applicants: CAD $28,502
  • 3 applicants: CAD $35,040
    And so on.
For applications before that date, older values (e.g., CAD $20,635 for one applicant) apply.
Note: You also must show funds for tuition, housing (if applicable), and travel.

Study permit conditions & validity

Once you receive a study permit:

  • It is usually valid for the length of your program, plus an extra 90 days to prepare to leave Canada or extend your permit.
  • You must remain enrolled at your DLI, make reasonable progress, and abide by any conditions listed on your permit (e.g., work-on- or off-campus rules).
  • If you change schools or programs, you may be required to apply for a new permit.

Common concerns & FAQ answers

How much bank balance is required for a Canada student visa?
You must show sufficient funds to cover first-year tuition, living expenses, and return transportation. For living only (excluding tuition) from Sept 2025: ~CAD $22,895 (single applicant) plus tuition costs.

Is Canada rejecting 80% Indian student visa?
There is no publicly confirmed figure of a blanket 80% rejection rate for Indian student visas. Visa outcomes depend on individual eligibility (DLI, funds, prior history, genuine intent).

What is the new rule for Canada student visa?
While basic requirements remain, some updates include stricter monitoring of DLIs and study permit holder compliance (e.g., DLI reporting) and updated living expense thresholds as of Sept 2025.

How much money do I need for a student visa in Canada?
Expect first year to include tuition + living costs + travel. For one applicant: living ~CAD $22,895 (Sept 2025) plus tuition (varies).

How long is a study permit valid?
It typically covers the duration of your academic program plus 90 days (grace period).

Is a 3-month bank statement enough for a Canada visa?
IRCC expects proof of funds over time (e.g., 4-month bank statements listed). Simply a 3-month statement may raise questions of stability.

How to avoid Canadian visa rejection?
Ensure: your DLI is legitimate; you meet finances; you have genuine intent; you fulfill document requirements; you don’t have unexplained gaps or inconsistencies.

How much ITR is required for a Canada student visa?
While IRCC does not publish a fixed ITR (income tax return) minimum, your family’s financial documentation must convincingly support your study and stay in Canada.

How much gap is accepted for study in Canada?
Study gap tolerances vary by DLI and visa officer. You should be ready to explain any gap convincingly (e.g., work, family duties).

What are the conditions for a student visa?
You must stay enrolled at DLI, make progress, obey permit conditions (work, study, leave, etc.).

Can I get 100% scholarship in Canada?
Yes—many Canadian universities and programs offer full scholarships for international students. But you still need a study permit and to meet eligibility.

What is the main reason for Canada student visa rejection?
Common reasons: inadequate funds, non-DLI institution, lack of genuine intent, missing documents, inadmissibility.

How to convince a Canada visa officer?
Provide complete clear documentation, show genuine education purpose, strong finances, home country ties (where applicable) and check DLI eligibility.

Do visa officers check ITR?
They may review financial history including ITR to assess funds and intent—especially for applicants from countries where bank statements alone may not be sufficient evidence.

How do I qualify for Canadian study visa 2025?
Meet DLI acceptance, funds, health, and intent; submit complete application; follow updated documents & thresholds as of 2025.

What happens if I don’t file ITR?
If you are expected to present proof of income or tax history as part of funds, missing ITR may weaken your case. Show alternate credible proof if applicable.
