Good news for eligible Ontarians! The first Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) payment of 2025 is scheduled to arrive on January 10th. This program provides crucial financial assistance to low- and moderate-income individuals and families across the province.

The OTB combines three key provincial tax credits:

  • Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC)
  • Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC)
  • Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC)

These credits help offset the rising costs of living, including property taxes, energy bills, and sales tax.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the OTB, you must:

  • Be a resident of Ontario
  • Have filed your income tax return
  • Possess a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Key Eligibility Requirements for Each Credit:

  • OSTC: Be 19 years or older, or a parent living with a child, or be married or in a common-law relationship.
  • OEPTC: Be a resident of Ontario on December 31st of the previous year, have paid property taxes or rent in Ontario, or have paid energy costs while living in a reserve or long-term care facility.
  • NOEC: Live in Northern Ontario, be 18 years or older, married, or a parent, and have paid energy costs or property taxes.

How Much Can You Receive?

The amount you receive depends on various factors, including your income, household size, and location.

  • Maximum Annual Amounts (2024):
    • NOEC: Up to $180 for single individuals, up to $277 for families.
    • OEPTC: Up to $1,248 for individuals aged 18-64, up to $1,421 for seniors aged 65 and above.
    • OSTC: Up to $360 per adult or child in the household.

Tips to Maximize Your OTB Payment:

  • File Your Taxes on Time: Ensure your income tax return is filed accurately and on time to maximize your benefits.
  • Claim All Eligible Expenses: Carefully review your expenses and claim all eligible deductions and credits.
  • Update Your Information: Keep your address and banking information up-to-date with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to ensure timely and accurate payments.
  • Consult a Tax Professional: If you have any questions or concerns, consult with a qualified tax professional for personalized guidance.
