NTNP Stream Eligibility (At a Glance)

To use our NTNP points calculator effectively, you must first qualify for one of the Northwest Territories' core economic immigration streams. Here are the primary pathways available in 2026:

NWT Express Entry Stream

  • Must have an active Federal Express Entry profile.
  • Must hold a permanent, full-time job offer from an eligible NWT employer in NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3.
  • Upon approval, candidates receive 600 CRS points guaranteeing a federal ITA.

Skilled Worker Stream

  • Targeted at individuals with a job offer in NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3.
  • Must have already worked in the position in the NWT for a minimum of 6 months.
  • Does not require an Express Entry profile, making it a viable base-PNP route.

Entry Level / Semi-Skilled

  • Designed to help employers fill shortages in NOC TEER 4 and 5 occupations.
  • Must have already worked in the position in the NWT for a minimum of 6 months.
  • Requires basic language proficiency (CLB 4).

Business Stream

  • Requires a minimum investment of $300k CAD in Yellowknife or $150k CAD outside.
  • Requires a personal net worth of $500k CAD (in Yellowknife) or $250k CAD (outside).
  • Candidates must make a pre-application exploratory visit to the NWT.

How to Increase Your NWT EOI Score

If your NTNP points calculator score is on the lower end of recent draw cut-offs (e.g., below 336 points), consider these strategies:

  • Relocate Outside Yellowknife: Job offers located in communities outside the corporate boundaries of Yellowknife instantly grant an extra 50 points.
  • Maximize NWT Work Experience: Since the program is employer-driven, working for your NWT employer on a valid work permit grants massive points—up to 100 points for 3 years of experience, plus 50 points just for holding the permit.
  • Pursue Targeted Trades: If your job offer is in one of the 11 targeted skilled trades (such as Carpentry, Plumbing, or Heavy Duty Mechanics), you receive a 40-point bonus.

What to Do After Being Selected

If your employer's Expression of Interest is selected in an NTNP draw, here is what happens next:

  • Submit Formal Application: The employer is invited to submit the formal NTNP application on the portal. You will need to provide all certified documents (passports, educational credentials, language tests).
  • Accept Nomination in Express Entry: If you applied via the Express Entry stream, you will receive a notification in your IRCC portal. Accepting it adds 600 CRS points.
  • Apply for PR: Once nominated, you must submit your final permanent residency application to the federal government. There is no provincial application fee for the Employer-Driven Stream.

Frequently Asked Questions (2026 NTNP Rules)

We monitor forums like Reddit to address real applicant doubts regarding the Northwest Territories Nominee Program and the Employer-Driven EOI process.

What does the acronym NTNP stand for?
NTNP stands for the Northwest Territories Nominee Program. It is an economic immigration pathway delivered in partnership between the Government of the Northwest Territories and the federal government to attract skilled workers and entrepreneurs to the region.
What is the 2026 NTNP nomination allocation?
In August 2026, the federal government granted the Northwest Territories an additional 103 nomination spaces, boosting their total allocation for the year from 197 to a massive 300 nominations.
Who submits the Expression of Interest (EOI)?
The NTNP is an employer-driven program. This means your prospective NWT employer must register in the NTNP online portal and submit the Expression of Interest naming you as the candidate.
Do I absolutely need a job offer for the NTNP?
Yes. For all streams under the Employer-Driven category (including Express Entry), you must have a valid, permanent, full-time job offer from a registered employer in the Northwest Territories. The Business Stream requires investment, not a job offer.
How frequently does NTNP hold draws?
With the recent allocation boost, the NTNP has planned a total of four draws for 2026. Recent draws were held in March, June, and August.
What is a competitive EOI score for the Northwest Territories?
Because the grid is out of 845 maximum points, competitive scores vary. In the most recent 2026 draws, invited candidates had scores ranging between 336 and 597.
How much does the NTNP application cost?
Unlike many other provinces, there is no provincial application fee for candidates applying under the Employer-Driven Stream. You will only pay the standard federal PR fees to IRCC.
What is the minimum language score required?
For the Express Entry stream, you must meet federal minimums (typically CLB 7). For general Skilled Worker and Entry-Level streams, the minimum required is CLB 4 in either English or French.
Does the NTNP target specific trades?
Yes. The program awards a 40-point EOI bonus to candidates with job offers in targeted trades, including Carpenters, Electricians, Plumbers, Heavy Duty Mechanics, Welders, Air Pilots, and Chefs.
Is it easier to get PR in the Northwest Territories?
The NTNP is considered "easier" in terms of point thresholds and low competition because of its remote location. However, securing the mandatory job offer from an NWT employer while living overseas is a significant hurdle. It is much easier for candidates already living and working in the territory on open work permits.
