Canadian citizens and permanent residents planning to host their parents or grandparents on a Super Visa must now meet elevated minimum income requirements, effective July 29, 2025.

Updated Minimum Income Requirements

The revised income thresholds, based on family size, are outlined below:

Size of Family2025 Minimum Income Requirement2024 Minimum Income Requirement
1 person (the sponsor)$30,526$29,380
2 persons$38,002$36,576
3 persons$46,720$44,966
4 persons$56,724$54,594
5 persons$64,336$61,920
6 persons$72,560$69,834
7 persons$80,784$77,750
More than 7 persons, per additional person$8,224$7,916

A host’s spouse or common-law partner may co-sign to combine incomes and meet these requirements. The Super Visa program allows parents or grandparents of eligible hosts to obtain visitor status for up to 10 years, with the ability to remain in Canada for up to five years per visit.

Basis of Income Requirement

The minimum gross income is derived from the federal government’s Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) criteria, adjusted annually. For 2025, this adjustment reflects a 3.9% increase.

Determining Family Size

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the following individuals must be included in the sponsor’s family size for income assessment:

  • The sponsor.
  • The sponsor’s spouse (including separated spouse) or common-law partner.
  • Dependent children of the host and their spouse or common-law partner (counted regardless of custody or support arrangements).
  • The Super Visa applicant(s) and any co-applicants (e.g., their spouse).
  • Previously approved Super Visa holders included in a valid letter of invitation signed by the host or co-signer.
  • Previously sponsored individuals whose sponsorship undertaking remains active.

Examples of Family Size Calculation

Example 1: Maria’s Case
Maria, a divorced Canadian resident with two dependent children under shared custody, wishes to invite her parents for a Super Visa. Her family size includes:

  • Maria (1) + her two parents (2) + her two children (2) = 5 members.
    Required minimum income: $64,336.

Example 2: Arjun’s Case
Arjun, married with one dependent child, wants to invite his grandmother for a Super Visa. His spouse hosts her parents on existing Super Visas. Family size includes:

  • Arjun (1) + his grandmother (1) + his spouse (1) + his child (1) + his spouse’s parents (2) = 6 members.
    Required minimum income: $72,560.

Example 3: Chinonso’s Case
Chinonso, married with one dependent child, plans to invite his two parents for Super Visas. He previously co-signed for his former spouse’s parents. Family size includes:

  • Chinonso (1) + his two parents (2) + his spouse (1) + his child (1) + his former spouse’s parents (2) = 7 members.
    Required minimum income: $80,784.

Proof of Income

IRCC accepts the following documents to verify income:

  • Most recent Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
  • T4 or T1 forms for the latest tax year.
  • Pay stubs from the past 12 months.
  • Employment Insurance benefit statements.
  • Accountant’s letter confirming annual income (for self-employed individuals).
  • Evidence of other income sources (e.g., pension statements).
  • Employer letter detailing job title, description, and salary.
  • Bank statements.

Super Visa vs. Parents and Grandparents Program

The Super Visa and Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) differ significantly in purpose and accessibility:

  • PGP: Successful applicants gain permanent residency (PR), enabling indefinite residency, work, study without permits, and eligibility for provincial/territorial health insurance. It operates via an annual lottery, currently limited to the 2020 interest-to-sponsor intake.
  • Super Visa: Grants visitor status for up to 10 years with stays of five years maximum, but no work or study rights, and typically no access to provincial health insurance. It is available year-round for direct applications.
