Executive Summary: Express Entry Pool Analysis

The competition within Canada's Express Entry pool is rapidly easing. Recent data reveals a significant drop in the number of top-scoring candidates, creating a highly favorable environment for applicants with scores in the high 400s and low 500s.

  • The 501-600 Drop: The number of profiles scoring between 501 and 600 CRS points has hit a multi-year low, dropping below 10,000 active candidates.
  • The Cause: A massive influx of Invitations to Apply (ITAs) issued in March—specifically targeting Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and French-speaking candidates—has drained the top tier of the pool.
  • What It Means: As the top-heavy profiles are cleared out, the CRS cut-off scores for future draws are mathematically forced to drop further.

Express Entry Pool Analysis 2026: Top-Tier Competition Drops by 30%

A bustling street in Toronto, representing the flow of Express Entry candidates

If you are waiting in the Express Entry pool, the numbers are finally shifting in your favor. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recently released its pool composition data for mid-March 2026, and it reveals a massive, continuous downward trend in top-tier competition.

In a span of just two weeks (March 1 to March 15), a net total of 1,172 profiles exited the pool. But it is who is exiting the pool that matters most. The bulk of the reductions came from the highest-scoring brackets, specifically the 501–600 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) range. With the top-heavy candidates being invited to apply at record speeds, cut-off scores are plunging.

Find Out if Your CRS Score is Competitive Enough Today

1. The Shrinking 501-600 CRS Bracket

At the start of March, immigration analysts predicted that the number of profiles in the highly competitive 501–600 range could drop as low as 10,000—a level not seen since 2024. The newly refreshed March 15 data confirms this trend is accelerating.

Between March 1 and March 15, the 501–600 bracket saw a net reduction of nearly 1,000 profiles. This drop is almost entirely due to IRCC aggressively targeting domestic candidates through massive Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draws.

The Hidden Drop:
The official IRCC data published on March 15 showed 13,039 profiles in the 501-600 range. However, this data does not account for three massive draws held between March 16 and March 18, which issued over 8,300 additional ITAs. Factoring in those draws, analysts estimate the 501-600 range has now plummeted below 9,000 profiles—a staggering 10% drop below the previous multi-year low.

2. Breakdown: Pool Composition Changes (March 1 to March 15)

While the top tiers drained, the middle and lower tiers of the Express Entry pool saw slight increases as thousands of new profiles entered the system. Here is the exact breakdown of how the pool shifted over the first two weeks of March 2026:

CRS Score RangeProfiles on March 1Profiles on March 15Net Difference

601–1200 (PNP)258360+102

The "Hidden" New Entries:
Between March 2 and March 5, IRCC issued over 10,000 ITAs. Since the total pool size only dropped by 1,172 profiles during that exact same window, it indicates that roughly 8,800 brand new candidate profiles entered the Express Entry pool in just two weeks. The competition at the bottom is growing, but the top is clearing out.

3. The "Unaccounted For" Draws (March 16-18)

The March 15 data looks promising, but the reality is even better. IRCC held three massive draws immediately after the data cutoff, issuing an additional 8,362 ITAs. These draws effectively gutted the upper-middle and top tiers of the pool.

Draw DateDraw TypeITAs IssuedCRS Cut-Off
March 18French-Language Proficiency4,000393
March 17Canadian Experience Class (CEC)4,000507
March 16Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)362742

Based on these specific cuts, we can deduce that the pool was further drained by 4,000 profiles in the 501+ range (due to the CEC draw), and 4,000 profiles in the 351-400 range (due to the French-language draw).

4. How Competitive is the Pool Right Now?

If you are trying to calculate your odds of receiving an ITA, you need to know exactly where you sit in the overall percentile of the 231,362 candidates currently in the pool.

Here is how the competition stacked up as of March 15, 2026:

CRS Score RangeNumber of CandidatesPercentage of Total PoolPercentile Rank (You score higher than X% of the pool)

601–12003600.16%Top 0.16%
The Strategic Takeaway: If you score above 480, you are currently in the top 17% of the entire Express Entry pool. If you score above 501, you are in the top 5%. With IRCC issuing over 28,000 CEC invitations already this year, candidates hovering around the 500-point mark are perfectly positioned for the next draw.
