AAIP Worker Stream Eligibility (At a Glance)

To use our AAIP points calculator effectively, you must first qualify for one of Alberta's worker streams. Here are the primary pathways available in 2026:

Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS)

  • Must have a valid temporary resident status in Canada that authorizes you to work.
  • Must be working in an eligible occupation in Alberta that matches your previous work experience.
  • Must meet minimum language requirements (typically CLB 4 or 5).

Rural Renewal Stream

  • Requires a valid job offer to work in a designated rural Alberta community.
  • Must receive an official Endorsement Letter from the designated community.
  • Provides a major bonus in the EOI points grid for economic factors.

Alberta Express Entry Stream

  • Must have an active Federal Express Entry profile.
  • Minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 300.
  • Used for highly targeted draws like Accelerated Tech, Law Enforcement, and Dedicated Healthcare.

How to Increase Your AAIP EOI Score

If your score in the AAIP points calculator is lower than recent cut-offs, consider these actionable steps to boost your standing in the 100-point grid:

  • Secure an Alberta Job Offer: A permanent, full-time job offer in Alberta immediately grants you 10 points.
  • Move Outside the Cities: Job offers outside of the Calgary and Edmonton Metropolitan areas grant an additional 5 points.
  • Get Licensed: If you work in a regulated trade or occupation, securing your official Alberta Qualification Certificate adds a massive 10-point bonus.
  • Improve your Language Test: Re-taking the IELTS or CELPIP to achieve a CLB 6+ will push your language score to the maximum 10 points for general proficiency.

What to Do After Receiving an ITA from Alberta

Once you are selected from the AAIP pool, you must move quickly:

  • Submit within the Deadline: You typically have a strict timeframe (often 30 days) to submit your complete application and pay the $500 processing fee.
  • Gather Documentation: Prepare your Notice of Assessment (NOA), valid language tests, employment letters, and educational credentials.
  • Maintain Eligibility: You must maintain your legal status to work in Canada and continue working in your nominated occupation while your application is processed.

Frequently Asked Questions (2026 AAIP Rules)

What is a good score for the AAIP Worker EOI?
While cut-offs fluctuate based on the specific sector being targeted, scores in the 60s and 70s are generally very competitive. For high-priority sectors like Agriculture and Construction, scores can drop into the 50s. Check the draw history table above to see recent trends.
Do I need an Express Entry profile for AAIP?
It depends on the stream. The Alberta Opportunity Stream and Rural Renewal Stream are "base" streams that do not require an Express Entry profile. However, the Alberta Express Entry Stream (used for Tech, Healthcare, and Law Enforcement pathways) requires an active federal profile.
Is an LMIA required for the Alberta PNP?
No, a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is not strictly mandatory if you have an eligible LMIA-exempt work permit (such as a Post-Graduation Work Permit) and a valid job offer.
How does Alberta calculate points for work experience?
Alberta awards points for both your total overall work experience (up to 11 points for 12+ months) and your specific Canadian experience (up to 10 points for 6+ months in Alberta).
What are the Priority Sectors in Alberta right now?
As of 2025/2026, Alberta's targeted priority sectors include Healthcare, Construction, Agriculture, Tourism and Hospitality, and Technology.
Can I claim family points for an in-law living in Alberta?
No. Under the updated rules, you can only claim the 8 points for a family connection if your parent, child, or sibling lives in Alberta as a PR or Citizen. In-laws do not qualify.
How does the Bilingual bonus work in AAIP?
To get the 3-point bilingual bonus, you must provide valid language test results demonstrating a minimum of CLB/NCLC 4 across all four abilities in both English and French.
What happens if I move to Calgary or Edmonton?
Alberta incentivizes rural settlement. If your job offer is located inside the Calgary or Edmonton Census Metropolitan Areas (CMA), you will receive 0 points for the job location factor. Moving outside these areas grants 5 points.
Can I use part-time work for AAIP experience?
No. For the majority of worker streams, your job offer and qualifying experience must be full-time (at least 30 hours per week) and permanent.
What is the Rural Renewal Stream?
It is a pathway for candidates who have a job offer and an official endorsement letter from a designated rural community in Alberta. This endorsement provides an extra 6 points on the EOI grid.
Does a high income give me more points in Alberta?
While the MPNP (Manitoba) uses a high-wage scoring system, the AAIP EOI grid does not award points directly for a high hourly wage. Instead, the focus is on whether the occupation is regulated, located in a rural area, or in a priority sector.
How long does AAIP processing take in 2026?
Processing times fluctuate based on application volume. Currently, the provincial nomination processing stage takes several months, after which candidates must submit their final application for permanent residency to the federal government (IRCC).
Can I apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) with an AAIP nomination?
Yes. If you receive an official provincial nomination from Alberta and apply for PR before your current work permit expires, you can apply for a BOWP to continue working in Canada while IRCC processes your permanent residency.
What are the settlement fund requirements for AAIP?
If you are applying under an Express Entry-aligned stream, you must meet the standard IRCC proof of funds requirements based on your family size, unless you are currently working in Canada with a valid job offer.
Are self-employed individuals eligible for the Worker Stream?
No. To be eligible for streams like the Alberta Opportunity Stream, you must be working as an employee with an employer-employee relationship. Independent contractors and self-employed workers are generally not eligible under the worker streams.
