  • The New Charge: Starting April 7, 2026, foreign nationals must pay a $135 fee to submit a Worker Expression of Interest (WEOI).
  • Impacted Streams: The new Alberta AAIP WEOI fee 2026 applies to all worker streams, including the Alberta Opportunity Stream, Rural Renewal Stream, and Express Entry pathways.
  • Competition is Fierce: As of April 1, 2026, there are over 44,000 candidates currently sitting in the AAIP EOI pool, fighting for just 4,928 remaining provincial nominations.

Alberta AAIP WEOI Fee 2026: New $135 Charge for Expression of Interest

Entering the provincial nominee pool in Alberta is no longer free. The Government of Alberta has officially announced that beginning April 7, 2026, foreign nationals will be required to pay a non-refundable $135 fee to submit a Worker Expression of Interest (WEOI) under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP).

Previously, submitting a WEOI—which acts as your initial candidate profile to be considered for a provincial nomination—was completely free of charge. This update shifts the financial timeline for applicants, requiring a small upfront investment just to be considered in future provincial draws.

1. Which Immigration Streams Are Affected?

The new $135 Alberta AAIP WEOI fee 2026 applies universally across all of the province’s worker streams and pathways. If you plan to submit a profile under any of the following categories, you will be required to pay the new charge:

  • Alberta Opportunity Stream
  • Alberta Express Entry Stream (Includes the Accelerated Tech Pathway, Law Enforcement Pathway, and all priority sector draws)
  • Dedicated Health Care Pathways (Both Express Entry and non-Express Entry)
  • Rural Renewal Stream
  • Tourism and Hospitality Stream

2. How the AAIP WEOI System Works in 2026

Since shifting to an Expression of Interest model on September 30, 2024, Alberta has managed its candidate intake through a competitive scoring system.

Candidates complete a WEOI form in the AAIP portal, self-declaring crucial information about their Canadian work experience, education, language proficiency, and regional ties. The system assigns a score based on the AAIP points grid and places the candidate into a selection pool.

Alberta then conducts targeted draws from this pool, prioritizing specific sectors (like healthcare or construction) and regional labor market needs. If a candidate is selected in a draw, they receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for a provincial nomination.

The WEOI Fee is Separate from the Application Fee:
The new $135 fee is just to enter the pool. If you are successfully drawn and receive an ITA, you must still pay the standard $1,500 application fee when submitting your complete AAIP application.

3. The Complete 2026 AAIP Fee Schedule

While the WEOI fee is new, the AAIP has maintained its existing pricing for all other services. Effective April 7, 2026, the complete fee schedule is as follows:

Immigration ServiceFee (CAD)
Worker Expression of Interest (WEOI)$135
Worker stream application (AOS, Express Entry, Rural Renewal, Tourism)$1,500
Entrepreneur stream application (Graduate, Foreign Graduate, Rural, Farm)$3,500
Entrepreneur Expression of Interest$200
Nomination extension request$150
204(c) Letter of Support request$150
205(a) Letter of Support request$150
Business Performance Agreement changes$150
Request for reconsideration$250

4. Critical WEOI Form Updates (February 2026)

Beyond the new fee, applicants must ensure their WEOI profiles are fully updated. On February 25, 2026, the AAIP introduced mandatory new fields to the WEOI form that collect specific data on wages and hours of work for candidates holding an Alberta job offer.

Any WEOI submitted on or after that date requires this information. The AAIP has explicitly warned that these new wage and hour factors will be used in future targeted draws. If you submitted a WEOI prior to February 25 and it is missing this information, you will not be considered in draws utilizing those factors.

5. The State of Alberta Immigration: Nominations & Inventory

Alberta remains one of Canada’s most sought-after destinations, and the data reflects massive competition. For 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) granted Alberta a base allocation of 6,403 provincial nominations.

As of April 1, 2026, the province has already issued 1,475 nominations. This leaves exactly 4,928 nomination spaces remaining for the rest of the year.

The "Bonus" Allocation:
In addition to the 6,403 base allocation, the AAIP can tap into a separate federal initiative that provides up to 10,000 extra nomination spaces across all PNPs specifically reserved for practice-ready physicians and Francophone candidates.

The Massive Candidate Backlog

The introduction of the $135 fee may be a strategy to curb casual submissions and ensure only serious candidates enter the pool. According to the AAIP’s April 1 data update, there are currently 44,094 worker EOIs sitting in the selection pool, with another 1,418 fully submitted applications waiting in the queue to be processed.

As indicated by the data, the Alberta Opportunity Stream remains the most competitive pathway, holding over 63% of all interested candidates.

For the remainder of 2026, the AAIP has confirmed it will heavily prioritize occupations in health care, technology, construction, manufacturing, aviation, agriculture, and candidates willing to settle in designated Rural Renewal Stream communities.
